INITIATIVE
You are at a creek with your two friends, Sam and Rick. Your friends are arguing over Sam’s new Samsung Galaxy S4. In argument, Rick sharply pushes Sam, and he falls into the creek. It all happens in a blink of an eye. In the fast running current, Sam is screeching, trying to keep his head out of the water, but his is being drifted down at a rapid speed, downwards the creek. There is no time.
You need to…
1. Get HELP: In urgent situations like this, the major priority is to reach help. Remember your other friend, who is probably very much frightened. You must take the initiative to take the lead and urge him to get help. Tell him to use his Samsung to call 000.
2. Danger: Think before diving into the creek to save your friend. You will probably put your life at risk if you jump in. Instead, run alongside the creek, talk to your friend, try to communicate with him.
3. There is no time. It will be too late before anyone comes for rescue. The water is murky. Somewhere down the creek, where the current has finally slowed down, Sam grows unconscious and drowns into the murky water. You have no idea how deep it is. Immediately slide down, your arm still outstretched on the river-bank. Ask your friend for aid. With Rick, you perform one of the skills you have learnt in one of your HPE Life Aid lessons, Search Rescue.
4. Imagine that you are searching for a car key underwater. Lower your body, move your arms in a circular motion, that the tip of your fingers touch your friend’s. You both signal each other when out of breath to come back up. On your second go, you both feel something.
5. Quickly, you pull Sam out onto the surface. As you go up, perform the Vice Grip to turn him around. Get him to the river-bank and hoist him out.
6. Do the first step of the CPR, talk to him, slap his face. Thankfully, you were fast enough for Sam to still have conscious. He wakes up and throws up water. Reassure him gently, tell him that someone else is coming
There are people coming from a distance. Well done, you have successfully saved your friend’s life.
